Rich Appell

appel-rich.jpg

Rich has spent most of his life listening to and loving music and radio, and working in the radio, music and media businesses. From high school and college radio to recent on-air work at stations like WRNJ (where he hosted The Rest of the Week with Rich Appel and filled in mornings, middays and afternoons), WGHT and Pop Gold Radio (where he’s filled in as host for The Time Machine countdown), it’s all led up to that thing.

Rich’s background goes beyond just radio - far beyond. Following 20 years at Sony Music Entertainment (home to Columbia and RCA Records, among others), he was editor of Billboard’s Top 40 Update and continues to write for the magazine and website, with chart-based series such as “Hot 100’s Hottest Weeks” and "Revisionist History.”

Rich co-authored Book of Days 60s and Book of Days 70s - each a by-day pop culture reference for its decade - and wrote the radio and music newsletter Hz So Good from 1996 to 2015.

When it comes to music, it literally rules my life. I have been DJ’ing since the early ’80s, but it wasn’t until the mid-90’s that I became interested in radio presenting. I love and respect all types of good music, right from as far back as the classic ’50s through to the indie pop ’90s. Unfortunately, I didn’t really enjoy much of what music had to offer after the ’90s ended.

I grew up listening to the radio as a young lad and started collecting vinyl at the mere age of 5 years old in the early ’70s. I would save my pocket money up to buy records as often as possible, and even now, 50 years on, I still collect music and I’m running out of space to put my vinyl collection.

Chris Pitchford - Solid Gold Sounds - Photo (1).jpg

Chris Pitchford

Since inheriting his sister’s records when he was knee-high to a grasshopper in the 70’s, Chris knew broadcasting, music and communications was the life for him, and the more buttons, levers, switches, faders and general gadgets involved the better, with his first “DJ kit” being a Bush Cassette Recorder and a Bontempi Organ, for his 4th Birthday.

Starting with a modest collection of MFP and K-Tel compilations and a few Beatles 45s mostly more battered than your average cod, he’s never looked back. In the early days it was the joy of spending 85p for this week’s hot single from WH Smith, and still having 15p pocket money left for a small scoop of cola cubes.

The 80’s was Chris’s “Golden Age” of music. Chris showcases his perennial penchant for 70’s and 80’s music and it’s modern contemporaries on Solid Gold Sounds, where he is just as happy with forgotten 45’s as their well known air-play and chart counterparts, so expect an eclectic and original mix of both on the programme.

The show has regular features and occasional themed specials, so if you love that wonderful era too (even if you weren’t there..) - there’s a warm welcome for all to enjoy the classics and maybe even a few you    missed !  (“Relax” T-Shirt, flairs, platform shoes, space hopper, and rubik's cube all entirely optional !)

Chris has been a Presenter and Audio Engineer with the East Shropshire Talking Newspaper For The Blind, for the last 32 years, and a radio veteran; having started out with involvement in Community Radio in the 90’s - his last station residency being a very happy 11 month stint at Revenge FM.

Chris is married to a published author, and when not busy editing her latest novel, he enjoys landscape photography, and can often be found alongside the dustiest box of vinyl in any remaining record shops, hoping to unearth a hidden gem, or failing that, at the nearest purveyors of unhealthy food !

Chris’s Music Trivia

Favourite Single : Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel - Make Me Smile

Favourite Album : Genesis - Invisible Touch

I bought my first single in 1969. “Sugar Sugar” by The Archies!

I continued collecting rather a cross section of music until my best friend bought me “Burn” by Deep Purple for my eighteen birthday!! That was it, I became a life long “rocker” from then on!!

So my first love is ROCK, as is my second & third love although, the Carpenters are my guilty pleasure! Aside from Rock, I also love Sixties & Seventies music probably because I lived through them! lol

A final thought. If someone had told me in 1969 not to collect the 6000 plus albums I collected over the decades because you’d be able to access them & more on a mobile phone that fits in the palm of your hand, I’d have never have believed it! Mind, I did enjoy collecting them!

I have worked in local/community radio for nearly 30 years and before that spent several years as a mobile DJ and then as a host of pop quizzes across the Country. My love is of music from the Rock & Roll era through to the early 1980's but I often find room in my shows for a good tune from more recent times.

Having made a nuisance of myself at several commercial and BBC local radio stations over the years, I found myself on air presenting a Sunday morning show on Radio Caroline at the turn of the millennium. I found a home at my local community radio station and then decided to have a go at syndicating my own show where I can play my kind of music. For my sins I am a QPR supporter but don't know why as they never come and see me when I'm bad. My favourite drink is tea, especially when a packet of bourbon biscuits is attached to it. I also enjoy hill walking in Norfolk.

After moving to Lanzarote I volunteered as a presenter on whitebeachradio.online a community station here in Lanzarote and that is where The Time Of Our Music Life was "born"

Stuart James

Stuart is married with a grown-up son and daughter; he lives in East Sussex just outside of Hastings. His radio career began in 1976 in hospital radio for the Woolwich Hospitals Broadcasting Service. In the same year he went to work, as a studio assistant, for BBC Medway, now called BBC Kent.

In 1979 he joined P&O Cruises as an Entertainment Officer/Disc Jockey, on board SS Oriana and SS Canberra. Whilst overseas, he was offered freelance work in Gibraltar for the British Forces Broadcasting Service. He took up their offer and made regular visits to cover for holidays on the late show.

In 1983 he took up the full-time post of Breakfast Show Presenter with the Commercial Radio Station for Ipswich, called Radio Orwell, now called Heart.

At the end of his contract with Orwell, he was offered a full-time freelance position with Radio Wyvern and Radio Tees. BFBS also offered him the role of Presenter/Producer, which would be a staff post, so in 1985 he joined their biggest radio station BFBS Germany, first in the regional studios of Berlin, then in Cologne, as the Network Breakfast Show Presenter with a daily audience of 10 million listeners.

After leaving Germany Stuart travelled with BFBS to Gibraltar, Belize, Hong Kong, Paderborn Germany, Brunei, London, Bosnia and Catterick.

During his twelve years with BFBS Stuart held many positions, such as, Presenter, Senior Producer, Music Director, Station Manager, Head of Presentation and Deputy Controller Worldwide Programming BFBS London.

Stuart left BFBS in 1997 as he was very unhappy with the way radio had changed to a computerised music scheduling format with no opportunity to have any musical input in to his show. Stuart went on to work for KFM Tonbridge, European Klassic Rock via Satellite, Sovereign Radio Eastbourne and BBC World Service in Network Operations.

Stuart has also been seen on many tv programmes and films over the years as a walk on. he has appeared in The Bill, EastEnders, Holby, Star Wars, Jack & the Beanstalk and many others.

Over the last few years Stuart has again been involved in radio, more behind the scenes with various internet radio companies.

But now he is really looking forward to getting back to his first love, presenting.

Stuart said “I can’t wait to start broadcasting, picking my own music again and formatting the show, just like radio used to be. It’s going to be great” You can find out how ‘The Golden Jukebox’ project came to be by visiting his website www.thegoldenjukebox.com

My love of radio extends way back to my childhood in the early 80’s, when my parents bought me my first radio in the shape of a can of ‘7up’.

It was a very creative decade with many different musical styles: the era of New Wave and the New Romantics but it was Soul music and Motown that really captured my attention.

It was from this point that my childhood ambition was born – to become a Radio Presenter.

As the years passed, the idea was parked – only to re-emerge a few years ago as the technology became available to create my very own home studio and I have never looked back.

Being a child of the 70s, I began to take notice of chart music at around the age of 5 or 6 years old, which would have been the early 80s. Like many of my school friends I would be glued to the radio as often as possible hoping to hear my favourite records. I used to visit the local record shop with my mum from a very early age, which is where my music collection began.

Over the years, I have collected many different types of music. Now I have the opportunity to share some of that music with you, here on your favourite station. My show includes weekly features such as..

“RETRO REWIND” “TIME TUNNEL” & “SANDY M's 12"INCH FINISH”

I hope you can join me from time to time right here each week.

I look forward to sharing some great music from across all the decades.

.Paul’s been a voice over artist for 30 years now, and in his new show–ReelMusic, he really wants the tunes to do the talking. You’ll hear chart hits made famous by movies, TV themes from shows both new and old, and lots more.

There’ll be brain teasers, random mixes and stuff you’ve never heard before, blended together in a show so eclectic, you’ll swear he’s making it up as he goes along.

Like many radio presenters of a ‘certain age’, I caught the radio ‘bug’ when I listened to the British ‘pirate’ stations in the 1960s on my transistor radio. The jingles were my favourite part and ‘Big L’ had the best ones (and I’m now proud to say that I have some personalized versions on my show!).

In the seventies, I started broadcasting on a hospital radio station in Surrey and one of my shows won a national competition for best hospital radio programme.

Noel Edmonds was one of the judges! In 1976, I became a Butlins redcoat entertainer presenting music and chat from their Radio Butlin studios at Clacton in Essex. Great fun, but very hard work.

In the 1990’s, I did the weekday morning show on Eclipse FM which broadcast on cable and FM. One of our directors was the legendary Dave Cash. A couple of years ago, I did a spell on the weekday afternoon show of a commercial station at the seaside in East Sussex.

My most embarrassing moments in radio were interviewing Bo Diddley who insisted I call him ‘Mr. Diddley’, and when I interviewed the comedian Richard Digance and I got a nose-bleed halfway through!

I now really enjoy presenting my weekly Happy Hour show here on Retrosounds Radio and I hope you’ll enjoy listening to it!

Mark Stafford started his radio career as a radio pirate broadcasting locally on FM and across Europe on Short Wave for a number of radio stations! Through the 1980’s he was Station Manager of the RBL International Service broadcasting legally on FM from the French Coast to the South Coast of England.

The 1990’s saw him working on Invicta FM, Invicta Supergold and other UK commercial radio stations before moving on to put together Europe’s first Satellite Rock Radio station, EKR – European Klassik Rock.
